This is an excellent tool for assessing the quality of your valve seal.  A properly prepared valve job should hold a vacuum when the button on the tester is depressed.  If it does not,  find someone else to do your head work because this will cost you horsepower.

Directions  

The head should be checked in two ways to determine seal quality.  

First, drop a valve in a seat and pull a vacuum through the intake and exhaust port.  This will check both the guides and the seats for leakage.

Next, pull a vacuum over the combustion chamber to check the seats only. 

NOTE:  If the combustion chamber test pulls a vacuum and the port test does not, you have a leak past the valve guides and stem which is not tool big of a deal on the exhaust but will burn oil on the intake.
